Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphological characteristics to determine the absorption of ossicles due to cholesteatomatous otitis media by the light and electron micro-scopes.
The results are as follows:
1. Matrix of the cholesteatoma in middle ear consisted of the squamous epithelium which was thinner and more cornified than the normal epithelium, and its basal layer was ridged toward the perimetrix.
2. In the subepithelial tissue of cholesteatoma, features such as the hyperplasia of capillary, the increase of collagen fiber, and the presence of active fibroblasts and mast cells were observed.
3.Osteoclasts showed the active bone absorption between the ossicles and the cholesteatoma.
In conclusion, cholesteatomatous otitis media was composed of cornified epithelial matrix and subepithelial connective tissue, caused to destroy the underlying bony tissue through the inflammatory response and the osteoclastic activation.
