The effect of cognitive rehabilitation in brain injured patients

Abstract
The purposes of this study are to examine the clinical conditions and cognitive functions that can be seen commonly in traumatic brain injured patients, and to verify the effect of a cognition rehabilitation program which is performed based on the results of the previous examination.
Traumatic brain injures commonly bring about not only dispositional disorders but also disorders in cognition, emotion, behavior and social functions as secondary psychological reactions to the damage. In particular, the deterioration of cognitive ability owing to a traumatic brain injury appears to last much longer than troubles in other areas, and to cause generally further serious social and occupational problems.
The cognitive ability of a patient with a traumatic brain injury degrades in various areas such as memory, attentiveness, problem-solving ability and organizing ability. Cognitive rehabilitation in this research aims to improve the defect in cognitive functions, which disturbs information handling, by intervening systematically in the functions.
For this research, we selected some patients in Samyook hospital, whose overall cognitive ability and memory ability are significantly impaired, compared to their intellectual ability, among patients with a traumatic brain injury.
As research tools we adopted Wechsler Intelligence Scales in Korean version(K-WAIS) for the screening test, and Memory Assessment Scale in Korean verson(K-MAS) and Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) for the pre-and post-test.
The results of this research are summarized as follows:
First, the test groups, on which the cognition restoration program had been performed, showed significant improvement in Their overall cognitive ability, compared to the control group, on which the program had not been performed.
Second, the test groups, on which the cognitive rehabilitation program had been performed, showed significant improvement in their memory ability.
