Influence of Panax Ginseng and Chlorpromazine on Metrazol-and Picrotoxin-convulsion

Abstract
It has been reported that Panax ginseng caused prolongation of hexobarbital-hypnosis and suppression of cocaine convulsion, suggesting some central effects of this crude drug. In the present study, employing frogs, it was attempted to examine whether metrazol-and picrotoxin-convulsion were affected by Panax ginseng.
The results of the present experiment showed that high doses of Panzx Ginseng definitedly suppressed onset of both metrazol-and picrotoxin-convulsion, but smaller doses had tendency to facilitate the onset of the metrazol-convulsion.
As it was reported by Deshpande et al.(1963)that metrazol-convulsion in the frog was potentiated by chlorpromazine, the effect of Panax Ginseng on these metrazol-chlorpromazine interactions was observed. The results were that the onset of metrazol-convulsion was markedly delayed when ginseng and chlorpromazine were administered together, i.e., the potentiating effect of chlorpromazine was blocked by Panax ginseng.
