The Influence of Atropine on Pulse Rate in Man

Abstract
The influence of atropine premedication on pulse rate was observed in eight healthy persons and in 106 adult patients who have undergone operation in this hospital during the period from July to October, 1963. Cases with organic cardi-ovascular diseases were excluded in this observation.
Atropine sulfate 0.2mg, i.v., a dose which elicits marked bradycardia in healthy persons, produced pronounced acceleration of pulse rate in 65 patients, and either decrease or no change in 41 cases.
A majority of cases in which acceleration of pulse rate was observed accompanied severe bleeding or dehydration. It is thus suggested that the effect of atropine on heart rate can also be modified by some factors resulting from acute bleeding or dehydration.
