Lactic Dehydrogenase Isoenzymes in Maturing Rabbit Reticulocytes

Abstract

|
Lactic dehydrogenase isoenzyme pattern in erythrocytes during maturation was studied in erythrocytes obtained from rabbits treated with phenylhydrazine, using a differential method for the heart type and muscle type isoenzymes with heat treatment at 60¡ÆC for 20 minutes.
Mature erythrocytes were found to contain predominantly the heart-type isoenzyme with barely detectable muscle-type isoenzyme. As the reticulocyte counts were increased the percentage of the muscle-type increased while that of the heart-type decreased proportionately. Total activity of the enzyme was also elevated in reticulocyte-rich hemolysate. Cessation of phenylhydrazine treatment brought about a return to normal erythrocyte pattern of the isoenzymes.
