Abstract

In the isolated vas. deferens preparation of rabbit adrenergic beta-receptor blocking agents (pronethalol, propranolol and MJ-1999) produced the following effects. 1) They potentiated the stimulant effect of norepinephrine. 2) Cocaine increased the norepinephrine contraction. The potentiating effect of the blocking agents was not observed when the preprations were treated with cocaine and vice versa. 3) The larger doses of pronethaiol and propranolol inhibited the response to norepinephrine. 4)They diminished the reducing effect of isoproterenol on norepinephrine contraction. 5) They inhibited the contractile response of vas deferens to hypogastric nerve stimulation aid transmural stimulation. These data indicate that the adrenergic beta-receptor blocking agents have atherpIiarmacological properties than the beta-receptor blockade, namely, inhibition of norepinephrine uptake, blockade of alpha-receptor, and neurotropic effect.
