Effect of Estrogen in the Phagocytic Activity of Reticuloendothelial System of Normal and Oophorectomized Rabbits

Abstract
Effects of the estrogen on the phagocytic activities of the reticuloendothelial system in rabbits were observed in this experiment. Estradiol benzoate (0.2 mg/kg body weight) was injected to the normal and oophorectomized rabbits(experimental groups) for 3 days, and phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system was observed by checking the distribution and disappearance rate of Collargol- 1311 ¢¥peel as a re icuJooendothelial bloelting agent. Three groups of animals, the normal, . the oophorectomized and the normal rabbits which received olive oil (solvent for estradiol benzoate), were used as the control groups for comparison in the experiment.
1. In the oophorectomized group, disappearance rate of C;ollargal? 1311 in the blood was slower than that in normal rabbits and radioaetivities of the reticulgepdophelial organs were also decreased.
2 Phagocytic activity of the control group which received olive oil was slightly increased right, after the injection and returned to normal level within 5 days.
3. Phagocytic activity of the experimental group, the normal animals which¢¥ received estradiol, was markedly increased; disappearance rate of the blocking agent was accelerated, and radioactivity of the spleen and liver was increased initially, but that of bone marrow was decreased. These changes in disappearance rate and radioactivity of the main reticuloendothelial organs returned to normal level within 10-20 days.
4. Phagocytic activity of the experimental group, animals oophorectomized. and injected estradiol, was increased considerably; disappearance rate Of the hocking agent of these groups was markedly accelerated and radioactivity¢¥, of tile spleen was severely increased. The radioactivity of the organs and disappearance rate returned to the previous level within 5-10 days after injection of estradiol. Tn the animals oophorectomized and injected estradiol, an increase of phagocytic activity was much more marked and its recovery to previous le -1 was
rapid than those in the group of normal animals injected estradiol,
