Prenatal Development of the Ilium in Korean Fetuses

Abstract
Histological and roentgenological observations were done in evaluating the fetal developmental process of the ilium with ninety-five Korean fetuses of 9mm to 360mm length (crown-rump measurement) and the following results were obtained.
1. The skeleton of the ilium consisted largely of condensed blastemal tissue 912 mm. The center of chondrification for the ilium appeared in the fetuses of the 18-20 mm length and was situated, cephalad to the greater sciatic notch. Increasing vacuolization of the cytoplasm of cartilage cell was noted at a period of 28mm to 30mm length.
2. The perichondral bone of the ilium in the vincity of the greater sciatic notch was seen at 40 mm length. In the 50 mm fetus endochondral bone formation was first noted. Ossification was spreading in two directions, inferiorly toward the triradiate zone and anteriorly toward anterior inferior iliac, spine. Later, ossification spreads laterally toward the limbus at 90-120 mm.
3. By the 250-300 vim of the center of ossification was spread laterally and inferiorly into the base of limbus. At term, the bony roof was found to consist of centeral endochondral bone and lateral and medial sheets of perichondral bone.
4. The method of the radiography after silver impregnation was simpler and quicker than the histological method in identifying the ossification centers of the fetal skeleton, and were found to be very valuable in earlier detection of the centers comparing with simple radiography.
