A 38-year-old male patient came to the hospital complaining of periodic attacks of paralysis of 3 months duration. He had also excess sweating, palpitation, nervousness and weight loss for 6 months.
Thyroid function study revealed that he had hyperthyroidism. During the hospital stay, he had an episode of spontaneous flaccid paralysis, which was associated with hypokalemia and another episode of paralysis was induced, by parenteral administration of glucose and insulin.
His hyperthyroidism was successfully treated with radioactive iodine and had no further attack of paralysis.
