Influence of Heart Rate on Cardiac Chamber Size and Ventricular Performance determined with Echocardiography in Normal Persons

Abstract
Cardiac chamber sizes and parameters of left ventricular performance were determined with echocardiography in 66 normal persons. The effect of heart rate on cardiac chamber sizes and parameters were also observed.
Normal values (mean ¡¾SD) of CE amplitude, DE slope, EF slope, A amplitude and left ventricular outflow tract were 26.2¡¾6.6mm, 342¡¾104mm/sec, 144¡¾44mm/sec, 17.3¡¾3.6ma and 30.7¡¾4.8 respectively.
Normal value of aortic root dimension (AD) was 2.5¡¾0.3cm, aortic cusp separation 1.8¡¾0.2cm, left atrial dimension (LAD) 2.7¡¾0.3cm, LAD and AD ratio 1.05¡¾0.19.
The value of end diastolic dimension and end systolic dimension of left ventricle were 4.9¡¾0.4cm, 3.3¡¾0.4cm, and thickness and amplitude of left ventricular posterior wall 0.77¡¾0.20cm, 1.21¡¾0.20cm. It was 0.78¡¾0.15cm in thickness and 0.615¡¾0.14cm in amplitude of interventricular septum.
In normal, fractional shortening was 34.0¡¾5.2%, ejection fraction 0.7¡¾0.07, mean rate of circumferential fiber shortening 1.15¡¾4-0.19 cir/sec, mean posterior wall velocity 4.0¡¾0.7cm/sec, maximal posterior wall velocity 6.31¡¾1.26/sec, mean normalized posterior wall velocity 0.82¡¾0.14/sec and maximal normalized posterior wall velocity 1.28¡¾0.24/sec.
There were correlation of heart rate to left atrial dimension and amplitude of left ventricular posterior wall, but other cardiac chamber sizes and parameters had no correlation to heart rate considered to be within the physiologic range (68.6¡¾11.3/min).
