Clinical Study on the Intraspinal Tumors A Review of 55 Cases

Abstract
The authors have presented 55 patients with intraspinal tumors who were admitted to the department of Neurosurgery, Chonnam University Hospital from September 1971 to August 1980.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. The common incidence. of age was between third to fifth decade and 8 cases (14.6 ¡Æ0) were under the 19 years of age. The ratio of male to female was about 5:3.
2. Types of intraspinal tumors in 55 patients were classified as neurofibromas in 17 patients, meningiomas in 12 patients, extradural metastatic tumors in 12 patients, extradural sarcomas in 5 patients, gliomas in 4 patients, lipomas in 3 patients, giant cell tumors in one and one neuroblastoma.
3. The most frequent involvement of spinal cord level was thoracic and the next were lumbar and cervical spine in order.
4. The duration of symptoms from onset to admission in the patients with metastatic epidural tumors were shorter than in those with any other spinal cord tumor. The majorities of the duration of symptoms were noticed from several months to one year.
5. The clinical features indicated that gait disturbance in 44 patients, pain in 39 patients and sphincter disturbance in 23 patients were the most prominent complaints. Paralysis, sensory impairment, and reflex changes were the most frequent neurological findings.
6. Spine radiography was abnormal in 36 cases (65.4%) of the patients, including erosion or widening of pedicles in 24 patients, destruction of spine in 17 patients, scoliosis in 10 patients, scalloping of posterior, surface of the spinal body in 6 patients, enlarged foramen in 4 patients and wide spinal . canal in 3 patients.
7. Cerebrospinal fluid protein was estimated in 37 patients and all of those were raised beyond the normal level.
8. Operative results on discharge time were obtained as follows; excellent in 6 patients, good in 24 patients, fair in 21 patients and poor in 4 patients.
