Recent Trends of Serologic Survey for Syphilis in Pregnant Women.

Abstract
As syphilis in pregnancy is injurious to mother and fetus, it is very important to prevent or treat syphilis in pregnancy. To detect syphilis in the early stage of pregnancy, antenatal care including the serologic test for syphilis in pregnant women is necessary.
In order to know the current pattern of VDRL reactive rate in pregnant women, 5797 women who were examined VDRL test at Chonnam University Hospital from January 1975 to December 1982 were analyzed.
The results are as follows
1. During this 8-year consecutive period, an overall VDRL reactive rate of 2.79% was found among the 5797 women studied.
2. 2.49 % of VDRL reactive rate in 1975 was increased yearly and reached to 5.22% in 1978. But, since 1979 it had been gradually decreased to 1.79% in 1982.
3. In the age distribution, the third decade shared 77.2% of the total seropositive women, of which the 25-29 age group revealed the highest incidence (50%)
But, annual ratios of the 20~24 age group were increased progressively.
4. Correlation of parity and VDRL reactive women showed the highest incidence (45.6%) to be at the birth of the first child, which was increased annually.
