Maternal Serum Aplha-Fetoprotein Levels in Abnormal Pregnancy

Abstract
Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in patients with intrauterine fetal death, missed abortion, twin pregnancy, toxemia of pregnancy, hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma.
Serum AFP levels of patients with intrauterine fetal death and twin pregnancy were increased significantly above the range for normal single pregnancy. In missed abortion and hydatidiform mole were significant decreases of the AFP levels noted. In preeclampsia, the AFP levels were not changed. Serum AFP levels of patients with choriocarcinoma were significantly below the levels of normal pregnancy after the 16th gestation period, but still showed a significant increase above the normal non-pregnancy levels. Serum AFP levels in hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma were not changed significantly by treatments.
It is suggested that the abnormal levels of serum AFP during pregnancy indicate the presence of various complications such as intrauterine fetal death, missed abortion, twin pregnancy, hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma, and that the determination of serum AFP levels may be valuable for ¢¥the diagnosis of these states.
