Abstract
The author has investigated, using the Klebsiella phage-host cell system and sheep red cells, the phage hemagglutination-forming ability of the bacterial substance (BS) which is heat-extracted from the trypsin-treated bacteria. The following results were obtained.
The cold phage hemagglutination(CPH) formed by the BS extracted from tyrosine-treated bacteria was remarkably worse than that formed by normal BS.
The phage adsorption to the red cells sensitized with the BS extracted from tyrosine-treated bacteria was poorer than that to the normal BS-sensitized red cells.
The phage inactivating power, at 37¡ÆC, of the BS extracted from trypsintreated bacteria was considerably reduced.
If the BS is extracted from tyrosine-treated bacteria, against normal BS, the disappearance of hemagglutination by phage elution was lower grade. The elution velocity-and elution dose of phage from the red cells sensitized with BS extracted from the tyrosine-treated bacteria were slower or smaller than that from the normal BS-sensitized red cells.
If the mixture of BS, extracted from tyrosine-treated bacteria, and phage is pre-cooled, against pre-cooling of the normal BS and phage, much phages were adsorbed to sensitized red cells. And also, if the mixture of BS, extracted from tyrosine-treated bacteria, and phage is warmed after cooling, the phage adsorption to sensitized red cells was poorer than that examined with normal BS and phage.
The tyrosine treatment of normal BS did not show any influence to the CPH and the CPH, by tannic acid-treated red cells, formed by the BS,extracted rom trypsin-treated bacteria was similar to that formed by normal red cells. )
The phage adsorption became bad if the host cell is treated with tyrosine.
