This study was undertaken to observe the experimental carcinogenesis induced by topical application of 0.5% 9,10-dimethyl-1, 2-benzanthracene(DMBA) on the hamster cheek pouch mucosa. 44-Golden Syrian Hamster, weighing about 100 g were used in this study and divided into 3 groups.
Group 1 (8 animals) was used as normal control group and sacrificed serially on 6th, 10th, 14th, 18th week.
Group 11(8 animals) was mineral oil-treated group which was painted only with heavy mineral oil on the right buckle pouch 3 times weekly and sacrificed serially as for Group I .
Group 11(28 animals) was DMBA-treated group which was painted with 0. 5% DMBA in heavy mineral oil and sacrificed serially on 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th week.
The buckle mucus were excised and examined grossly and light-microscopically.
The results were as follows.
1. Group 11 was grossly and histopathologically similar to Group I .
2. In gross observation of group 11, leukoplakia and papilloma at 10-12 weeks, and exophytic squamous cell carcinoma at 16-18 weeks were observed.
3. In light microscopic observation of Group 1, hyperkeratosis in the 6th week, dysphasia about 10 weeks, papilloma in the 12th week and carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma about 16^¢¥18 weeks were observed.
4. Focal acantholytic dyskeratosis was observed in the 8th, 12th, 14th week.
