Clinical observation on testicular tumor


Abstract
A clinical observation was made on 14 cases of testicular tumor, admitted to the Department of Urology, Chonnam University Medical School during the period of January 1977 to December 1985.
The results are as follows.
1. Age distribution ranged from 8 months to 36 years old, showing the highest incidence(79%) in patients 10 years old and under.
2. Pathologic examination revealed embryonal carcinoma in 7 cases (2 cases of infantile type and 5 cases of adult type) and teratoma in 7 cases.
3. Presenting symptoms and signs were painless scrotal mass in 12 cases (86%), painful scrotal mass in 1 case(7%) and postorchiectomy scar tissue on the inguinal region in 1 case(7%).
4. Laterality of involved testis was the left side in 8 cases and the right side in 6 cases.
5. Pre-orchiectomy evaluation of serum AFP and HCG was made in 11 cases and 5 cases respectively. AFP was elevated in 5 cases of embryonal carcinoma and 1 case of teratoma, and HCG was normal in all 5 cases.
6. Radical orchiectomy only was performed in 9 cases. Adjuvant chemotherapy was given in 5 cases after orchiectomy.
7. Follow-up study was made in 14 cases with mean duration of 41.8 months.
Of these, 3 embryonal cases with orchiectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy died 2, 5 and 14 months after orchiectomy. One radical orchiectomy only patient .died 3 months after operation. Remaining 10 cases are alive for mean follow-up of 56.2 months.
