Abstract
This paper presents the clinical study of 41 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome under the 15 years of age, those were admitted to the department of Pediatrics of Chonnam University Hospital from January, 1977 to May, 1986.
The results were as follows;
1) Twenty six cases were male and 15 cases female (sex ratio; M:F=1.7:1) The age ranged from 1 year and 2 months to 15 years and most cases were under 10 years of age.
2) 18 cases (44%) were admitted during the summer months.
3) 25 cases (61%) occurred within 4 weeks after an antecedent event, 21 cases of which were upper respiratory infections.
4) Paralytic patterns were as follows: paralysis of lower extremities in all 41 cases, upper extremities 31 cases, cranial nerves 19 cases and respiratory muscles 15 cases. Sensory changes were noted in 12 cases (29.3%).
5) Within 7 days after initial motor weakness only 12 cases showed the characteristic pattern of albuminocytologic dissociation in CSF, but the protein content in CSF increased significantly in all cases after 7 days.
6) The overall recovery rate was 65.8%, but 8 cases (19.5%) discharged within the 7th hospital day without any changes of paralysis. The mortality rate was 9.8 %.
