Zielke Instrumentation for the Unstable Spinal Conditions


Abstract
Recently, the indications for the application of Zielke instrumentation were expanded to various unstable spinal conditions, although the instrumentation system was developed for the correction of scolosis.
This paper reported the clinical results of 64 Zielke instrumentations for the unstable spinal conditions other than scoliosis. They were performed at Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chonnam University Medical School from April, 1986 to September, 1987.
1. Ages of the patients were between 10 years and 74 years (Av. 40.5 years). Male were 29 cases and female were 35 cases.
2. Etiology of the operations were spondylolisthesis in 26 cases, spinal stances in 9 cases, fracture and dislocations in 20 cases, tuberculous spondylitis in 20 cases, and congenital kyphosis in 1 case.
3. Methods of fixation were transpedicular instrumentation 39 cases, anterior instrumentation in 23 cases and combined in 2 cases.
4. Bony union was observed in 62 patients between 3 to 6 months after operation. 5. Complications included four rod failure and one faulty transpedicular screw insertion.
