Clinical Study of Pediatric Surgical Patients


Abstract
A clinical analysis was made on 829 cases of pediatric surgery under age of 15 years which were operated upon at the Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, Chonnam University Hospital from January 1988 to December 1992.
The results were as follows.
1. The incidence of pediatric operation was 12.4% of total 42,975 operations at Chonnam University Hospital.
2. The most prevalent age group was under 1 year of age (11.5% ).
3. The incidence of pediatric surgery was 15.6% of total 5,319 pediatric operations at Chonnam University Hospital.
4. The incidence of patients under 1 year of age in pediatric surgery was 38.6% of total 829 operations.
5. Common diseases in age under 1 month were anorectal malformation and hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and common diseases in age between 1 month to 1 year were inguinal hernia and intussuception.
6. The mortality rate in neonatal intensive care unit was 41.2%. Gastroschisis and esophageal atresia presented highest mortality.
