Abstract
Hookworm infection is the most important endemic disease, it has been studied on the endemicity of hookworm infection in Korea, relatively for long time.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of hookworm infection in Chollanamdo from the lst of August 1980 to the March 1981. The stool specimens of 1,654 persons(male: 841, female: 813) collected from the inhabitants, who live in the area of Gwangju city, Laju Gnu, Haenam Gun, Wando Gun and Boseong Gun were examined. The method employed were Kato¢¥s cellophane thick smear technique for the prevalence rate of intestinal helminths infection, brine floatation technique for the prevalence rate of hookworm infection and Stoll¢¥s dilution egg counting technique in all positive cases of hookworm for the evaluation of the mean E.P.G.
The following results were obtained in this study.
1. The prevalence rate of hookworm infection in 1,654 was 5.7%(male: 5.2%, female: 6.3%) by the brine floatation technique. It was higher in female than in male.
2. The prevalence rate of hookworm infection by age group was as follows: age group of 30-39 7.2%, 50-59 and over 60 6.7%, 10-19 4.4%, 20-29 4.0%, and 0-9 2.4%. it showed higher in older age group than in younger age group.
3. The prevalence rate of hookworm infection by each surveyed area was as follows : Boseong Gun 9.9%, Wando Gun 7.1%, Laju Gun and Haenam Gun 4.5% and Gwangju city 1.2%.
4. Prevalence rate of intestinal helminthic infections of any kind was 71.0% among 1,654 by cellophane thicksmear technique. The rate of each helminth was as follows : Trichuris trichiura 51.8%, Ascaris lumbricoides 36.0%, Trichotrongylus orientalis 9.7%, Metagonimus yokogawai 0.1%, Enterobius vermicularis 1.1%, Clonorchis sinensis 0.6% and Taenia Species 0.06%.
5. The mean E.P.G. of hookworm infection in 95 positive cases was 969(male : 859, female : 1,382) by Stool¢¥s dilution egg counting technique.
