A Case of Myelodysplastic Syndrome Transformed to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

Kim Won-Sik

Abstract
The myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is characterized by variable degrees of pancytopenia in peripheral blood, harper-or normocellularity in bone marrow due to bone marrow stem cell dysfunction and in some cases, conversion to acute myelogenous leukemia(AML). Recently it was classified into five subtypes and recognized as an individual disease entiiy in the French-American-British (FAB) group, There are variable clinical courses and difficulties in treatment generally. It is clinically important to differentiate MDS from acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) because the former may be stable for many months or years N ithout treatment, or with supportive therapy alone.
We report a case of MDS transformed to AML. The patient was 29-Year-old female who complained of general weakness, dizziness, sore throat and swallowing; difficulty, diagnosed as sideroblastic anemia at July 11, 1983 and progressed to AML . at June 13, 19,91 via transitional stage of 12 months. She was less responsive to pyridoxine, androgen., steroid, frequent transfusion and others.
