Background and Objectives: Cognitive restructuring training for dysfunctional beliefs has been excluded or neglected in the known cognitive-behavioral group therapies. We developed a group cognitive-behavioral therapy (GCBT) in which cognitive restructuring training for dysfunctional beliefs was included as an another component and examined the effectiveness of GCBT for social phobias preliminarily.
Method: Six undergraduates diagnosed with social phobia received GCBT for 12 weeks. They participated in an extensive assessment consisting of a clinician¡¯s severity rating and several self-report inventories at a pretest, posttest, and at a 3-month follow-up, as well as in the initial and middle phases.
Results: The GCBT produced significant reductions in social phobic symptoms, negative automatic thoughts; dysfunctional beliefs, and fear of negative evaluation. These treatment effects were maintained on most measures at a 3-month follow-up. Supplementary analysis indicated that cognitive restructuring training for dysfunctional beliefs play an important role in improving social phobia.
Conclusion: GCBT appears to be an effective treatment for individuals who experience social phobia.
