Abstract
Background : With the rapid increase in the aged population, we need to pay more attention to somatic disease and mental health in elderly patients. Thus, we can help manage elderly patients by studying factor associated with being elderly and their frequency of depressive moods.

Methods : We selected 110 subjects over 65-yeasr-old who were treated in one of the social security centers from Mach, 1999 to June, 1999. We analyzed medical records find the relation between Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean (GDS-K) scores and sociodemographic factors, common disease factors, back and knee joint pain scores etc. Statistical data analysis using t-test or ANOVA and multiple regression was performed.

Results : The results showed that depressive mood appeared in 10(32.3%) cases among males, 49(62.0%) among female and 59(63.6%) total among 110 subjects. Factors associated with depressive mood of the elderly were old age, for female, without spouse, medicaid, arthritis, severe back pain and arthralgia.

Conclusion : The prevalence of depressive moods in the elderly was 63.6%, but many elderly patients with symptoms of depressive moods do not visit a hospital. The primary care physician should suspect depression in the management of elderly patients and understand associated factors influencing depression.
