Artefacts superimposed on the Electroencephalogram

Abstract
For the past three years, 1958-1960, the author has checked-up 980 cases arising from, sources outside the brain, of the 800 patients at our Electroencephalographic laboratory, with 8 Channel Machine, Type E 521, No. 1275 (110 volts, 60 HZ) made by Messrs. Schwarzer Company, West Germany. .
All these potentials were classified and eliminated as artifacts, and its results were: as follows:
(1) Artifacts of living organ (73%) were more arising than sources of electric change in bedside of the body.
(2) It was not difficult to recognize and eliminate all the artifacts in living organ, such as those caused by eye movement, muscle action potentials, gross movement. of the body, sweating, electrocardiogram and pulsation, by the observations of C. P. S., amplitude, wave pattern, regularity synchronity and mobility of the body.
(3) Of all the recognized artifacts, muscle action potentials were the majority, proximately 30%.
(4) Artifacts of outside of the body, such as electrode, 60 cycle, disturbances in the power supply and the amplifiers, were able to be eliminated easily by their characteristics except those of electrode appeared as sharp spiked wave of various. voltage.
(5) The author hopes that the better Filter and Analyzer for Electroencephalography should be improved in the near future so as to enable the beginners in E. E. G. , could keep out from the most difficulties and various artifacts which the author has experienced.
