Three cases of Carotenemia due to Gihm(marine plants)

Abstract
|
|
|
It is well known in most in most in stances carotenemia is the result of ing stion of excessive amounts of food rich in carotinoid pigments such as carrots, squash, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, beans, oranges, and palm oil.
In Korea we eat a certain kind of marine plants, which is called Gihm in forean. Gihm is collected in the sea, dried like thin paper, seasoned with solt and sesame oil, broiled just little bit and served, So-called seaseoned laver is made with this kind of marine plants, that is Porphyra group.
A 19 yars old girl was found with yellowish discoloration, her serum bilirubin was 0.21mg% while the icterus index was 14 unit. It was found that she had been taking more that 20 sheets of Gihm (about 40gm) every day, and this was the only source of the excessive carotene in her blood.
Gihm containes 14.6mg of carotene per 100gm of it. The author expects many cases of carotenemia due to Gihm in Korea.
