Clinical Report On Posttraumatic Epilepsy In Koren Veterans


Abstract
During the three year period from 1953 to 1955 the author and other members of the staff of the Choon Chun mobile neurosurgical team operated on all patinets evacuated to that unit with head injuries requiring surgery. Later, all surviving patients were transferred to the 3rd ROK Army Hospital through Soodo ROK Army Hospital for the purpose of cranioplasty and other posttraumatic care. The authors continued to follow these patients and observe their general condition and postoperative course, especially concerning the appearance of convulsive seizures, for about 6 years. The results of this observation are as follows;
(1) The incidence of posttraumatic epilepsy in our 148 cases studied was 51.4%.
(2) Posttraumatic epilepsy was most commonly associated with parietal lobe injuries produced by missiles.
(3) Surgical treatment of patients with P. T. E. by the penfield Technic resulted in 66% of the patients obtaining some improvement.
(4) Post seizure spinal fluid examinations were all within normal limits.
(5) A directly proportional relationships was found between the incidence of P. T. E. and the Iength of unconsciousness associated with the injury.
(6) Initial seizure most commonly occurred within 6 months after head injury.
(7) One third of the patients with P. T. E. had only petitmal.
