Study on the Psychological Aspects of the Korean Primigravidas


Abstract
The data for this study was obtained from 244 Korean primigravidas living in Seoul and visiting the out patient departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ewha Womans¡¯ University Hospital, Yon Sei University Medical Hospital, and Sung Dong Ku Health Center from June 1965 to May 1967.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological aspects of primigravidas during pregnancy by studying such items anxiety, fear, mood change, a matter of concern, etc. It is hoped that this information will contribute to better prenatal psychological education.
1. One half of the Korean primigravidas had anxiety and/or fear about herself and her baby. This increased with education and in pregnant women without any specific religion. She was twice as concerned about herself (41 %) as than the baby (27%).
2. Among fears about herself, fear of difficult labor (11%) was most common, fear about abortion and premature delivery and abnormal pregnancy (6%) were the second, and the fear of pains at time of delivery (15%), the third, in order.
3. It was interesting to notice that the primigravidas who planned pregnancy were actively concerned whether the baby is healthy or superior rather than the baby¡¯s death (stillbirth) as worried passively by these who did not want to have pregnancy.
4. The important reasons for not wanting to have pregnancy among primigravidas
were in the economic insecurity (34%) and enjoying more of her newly married life (28%). It was strongly emphasized that the importance of the premarital family planning as well as the obstetrical sex education in the prenatal care.
5. Majority of the primigravida (75%) who planned pregnancy felt happy at the moment when she recognized herself being pregnant. Unexpectedly inn small percent of the primigravidas who did not want to be pregnant also felt happy when recognized being pregnant.
6. The major concerns of the pregnant women were more about mother herself than the babyside such as her physical care (30%), health consultation with obstetrician (22%), food or nutrition, etc. It seemed it is the important point in the effective management of maternal care.
7. The mood change of the primigravidas during pregnancy were feeling of depression and mental irritability, and these occurred in more than one half of the primigravidas (60%) and during the first and second trimester of pregnancy (47%), and only a few of them at the last trimester of pregnancy (13%). It was a significant feature for the prenatal psychological education of the primigravidas.
