Bio-effects of Rapid Decompression on Animals


Abstract
An experimental study was performed to know the bioeffects of rapid decompression, using several kinds of animals. Rapid decompression was achieved by puncturing a cellulose acetate diaphragm separating a parasite chamber from a large low pressure chamber. Decompression was carried from the sea level to an altitude of 40,000 feet. The pressure change took place in a matter of less than 1 second. Animals were 15 rats, 15 mice, 12 uroloncha and 10 rabbits.
After rapid decompression these animals, were persistently kept in the chamber until death. Naked eye observation of general behavior and ECG tracings were performed. Criteria of death were standardized with ECG picture. Immediately after death blood samples were obtained by puncture of left heart and red cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit and specific gravity were examined. All organs were examined pathologically after death.
The following results were made:
1) After rapid decompression the entire groups of animals revealed fatal outcome within 5 minutes.
2) The average durations of survival were 4.91¡¾0.64 min in rats, 3.25¡¾1.04 min in mice,
1.47¡¾0.06 min in uroloncha and 1.77¡¾0.19 min in rabbits.
3) Blood samples after rapid decompression showed hemoconcentration in all animals.
4) All of the animals showed prominent lung lesions that were characterized by hemo
rrhages, atelectasis and edema.
These pulmonary lesions appear to be the results of mechanical injuries at rapid decompression, and these changes together with grave hypoxic damage of brain were assumed to be the main cause of death in this experiment.
