Polymyxin B for Treatment of Erythema Nodosum Leprosum and its Histamine Releasing Effect to Mast Cells and Blood Eosinophil Leucocytes

Abstract
Since erythema nodosum leprosum has increased mast cells in its lesions, its treatment with a potent histamine liberator-Polymyxin B and effect to the mast cells and blood eosinophil were investigated.
Total 16 patients of erythema nodosum leprosum was in this trial and number of mast cells and blood cosinophil were compared after each injections of polymyxin B.
Following results were observed:
1) ENL nodules and neuritis were slowly releaving after the polymyxin injections, yet it was not complete.
2) Releaving from nodule was preceeding to that of neuritis in many cases.
3) After the considerable releaving from the symptoms by polymyxin, the symptoms responded promptly to predinisolone.
4) Numver of the M. C. reached to the least after the first injection and the cell was rebounded inspite of weekly injections.
5) Number of the eosioophile increased and reached to highest number after the 2nd injection, and thereafter decreased slowly as injection continued.
6) Number of the eosinophile increase when the mast cell decrease and as vice versa eosinophlie decrease when the mast cell increase. This change in eosinophile occurs around one week after the mast cell change.
7) From these observations the conclusion was reached to that ENL is not solely due to histamine increase in that lesion, but there must be some other factors associated.
