Influence of Venous Drainage from the Brain by the Confluence Sinuum

Abstract
The ultimate impression is that the superior sagittal sinus predominantly drains into the right and the straight sinus into the left feternal jugular vein.
Edwards(1932), Gibbs and Gibbs(1934), and Woodhall(1939) had described the types of sinus confluence with or without figures for sinus size, or dealt with individual sinus size and distribution of flow without description of confluence types.
But Browning(1953) had described the types of sinus confluence with figures for sinus size and influence of flow by confluence types.
The present report is an attempt to clarify flow influence by the confluence of sinus system, with particular attention to ability of either transverse sinus to carry the entire venous return.
The experiments had contained the average fluid outflow and that for one minute interval and one square centimeter from the transverse sinuses of 10 systems.
The obtained results were summarized as follows:
1. The flow patterns usually corresponded to the anatomical configuration of the system.
2. When fluid entered the sinus systems through the superior sagittal sinus, fluid outflow and the average fluid outflow for one minute intervals and one square centimeter from the right transverse sinus was larger than that from the left.
3. When fluid entered the sinus systems through the straight sinus, fluid outflow and the average fluid outflow for one minute intervals and one square centimeter from the left transverse sinus was larger than that from the right.
4. When fluid entered the sinus systems through the superior sagittal and straight sinuses, fluid outflow from the right transverse sinus was larger than that from the left, but the average fluid outflow for one minute intervals and one square centimeter from the right transverse sinus was smaller than that from the left:
5. When two transverse sinuses were showed dominance, fluid outflow from one or other was disproportionate. But the confluence usually directed the greater part of the flow from the superior sagittal sinus into the right transverse sinus and the greater part of the flow from the straight sinus into the left transverse sinus.
