A Study on the Unexpected Accidents among the Young Children


Abstract
Unexpected accidents are very common among the young children between ages 0-6. while playing at home. A study has been made on the accidents as registered in the OFD and IPD of the Kyung Hee Medical Center for the period of eight months from. March 1973 through October 1973, and the followings are conclusions obtained thereof.
1) Accidents took place more frequently during their playing hours (74. 01%), and., especially in the afternoon of the day (64. 9%). It is important to note that occasional accidents are also reported during the meal-time with the mother near at hand.
2) Main causes of the accident are by trauma (40.12%), burn (22.03%), and foreign, body (12.99%).
3) Frequent accidents take place mostly indoors, and also outdoors where the mother¢¥s. preventive care was not reached. Indoor accidents are common in the room, on the floor and in the bath room.
4) At the time of accident the children were with family (30. 51 /), mother (27.11 %),housemaid (15.81 %), and with no one around except the children themselves (26.5 %).
5) The accidents were caused by furniture, food, and foreign body.
6) Locations of the body injured by the accident were: face (31. 71 %), lower extremities(28. 04 %), upper extremities (19. 51 %), head (12. 19 %), trunk (7. 93 %), and tongue (0. 61 %).
7) Emergency treatment right after the accident was given at : hospital (45.19 %), home (37.29 %), pharmacy(12. 43 %), and nothing was done (5.08%).
8) The possibility of preventing accidents was suggested as possible (78. 3 %), impossible (15. 0 %), and uncertain (6.6 %).
