A Study of the Correlation between Physical Fitness and Personality


Abstract
It is generally believed that a close correlation may exist between physical fitness and personality. To examine the hypothesis, 354 students were tested, which consisted of 4 groups (78 male students and 58 female in the department of physical education, 126 male students and 92 female in the department of liberal arts).
The result obtained for this examination is as follows: In the male group of the physical education department, Dominance 78, Masculinity 79, in the female group of the physical education department, Dominance 86, Impulsiveness 79, Masculinity 87: in the female group of the liberal arts department. Masculinity 78 High degree of correlation ship is observed as above.
And in the male group of the physical education department, Reflective ness 16: in the male group of the liberal arts department, Dominance 40, Emotional Stability 16, Objectivity 34, Reflective ness 12: in the female group of the phy¡þsical education department, Reflective ness 10: in the female group of the liberal ai Ls department, General Activity 38, Emotional Stability 37, Objectivity 33, Reflective ness 07, Sociability 37. Low degree of correlation ship is observed as above.
To sum up, in comparison with the liberal arts group, physical education department show a high degree of correlation ship, especially in Masculinity. But in the other personalities, the correlation ship is rather moderate, while no rela¡þtionship is observed in the personality of Reflective ness.
In this respect, the experience, long or short, of physical exercises which are aimed to increase physical fitness, surely exercise a considerable influence on the personalities. As so, it may be admitted that there exists a close correlation between the two factors.
