Changing Trends of Incidence Rates for Circumcision and vasectomy among Korean Physicians for, past 50 years. A Cohort Observation.


Abstract
With 9,036 Korean physicians who were registered at the Korean Medical Association in 1972, the incidence rates for circumcision and vasectomy for past, 50 years were computed applying cohort concept. This study is a part of general morbidity studies with Korean physician population done in 1974.
The pretested questionnaires were sent out to the entire physician population by mail. The return rate was approximately 71%. There were, evidences that the, reliability and validity of the information were fairly high:
Followings are brief summary of the results.
1. Circumcision was performed in 25.3% of physicians responded. This indicated that the circumcision was the most common surgical operation performed among male physician population.
2:. The circumcision as performed most commonly in ages between 25~29.
3. The birth cohort showed the younger the ages of physicians the more circumcisions were performed. Circumcision was performed in 40% of physicians who were in the ages 25-29 in 1972.
4. The circumcision was not a popular surgical operations before 1960, however the circumcision rates were, increasing fast recently.
5. 5.9% of physicians reported that they received vasectomy.
6. Before 1960 the vasectomy was performed rarely in physician population, however the rate grew faster after 1960.
7. Majority of vasectomies were performed in ages 40-44. However the ages tended to decrease by years.
