Clinical Effects of Oxolinic Acid on Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract
Oxolinic acid (1-ethyl-1, 4.-dihydro-6, 7-methylendioxy-4-oxo-3-quinoline carboxylic acid) is a new synthetic anti microbial agent.
Its spectrum of activity is similar to that of nalidixic acid in that it is primarily active against Gram-negative bacteria with the exception of pseudomonas. Moreover, oxolinic acid is active against Staphylococcus aureus.
Authors evaluated the antibacterial activity of oxolinic acid against Gramnegative organisms in urinary tract infection. With 2.0gm. of oxolinic acid per day in divided doses for average 7 days, 35 cases of urinary tract infection due to Gram-negative organisms were treated and then 77.6% was cured clinically and 75.0% bacteriologically. Any side effects of oxolinic acid did not develop during treatment was continued.
We consider this drug to be one of the effective antibiotics in urinary tract infection due to Gram-negative organisms.
