The Changes of Mitochondria of Renal Tubular Epithelium Induced by Mercury

Abstract

|
The changes of mitochondria of kidney proximal convoluted epithelial cells induced by mercury bichloride are summarized as follow:
The mitochondria of proximal convoluted epithelial cells injured by mercury :show disappearance of cristae, fragmentation and irregularity of their membrane in early time. These changes are more prominent in later time so that disappearance of cristae is more marked and the number of mitochondria is totally decreased. But swelling of mitochondria is slight. Fused mitochondria (chondriosphere) are seen at early as well as later time.
The results suggest that mercury may induce degeneration of mitochondria but accumulation of certain materials within mitochondria resulted from derangement of membrane permeability is not noted.
