Abstract

Preoperative and postoperative endocervical cultures were taken from 6 women who underwent vaginal hysterectomy. They received a three-day course of prophyl-axtic gentamicin treatment at the dose of 50mg per 6 hours. Comparisons of preoper-ative and postoperative isolates of Lactobacillus by species and their antibiotic suscep-tibilities were made. Of 6 cases undergoing hysterectomy, alterations of microbial flora occurred by species in 4 cases and by antibiotic susceptibilities in 2 cases. These results suggest that even a short-term antibiotic administration does significantly alter the vaginal flora in patient undergoing hysterectomy.
