Enoxacin, a new oral pyridone carboxylic acid was evaluated clinically for 38 patients with urinary tract infection in our department during past 5 months periods from Septem-ber, 1986 through January, 1987. Enoxacin was orally administrated at a daily dosage of 300mg for 4-7 days and following results were obtained.
1. Therapeutic effects (excellent and good) were observed in all 21 patients with cystitis, giving effectiveness rate of 100%, 6 out of 7 with urethritis(85.7%) and 6 out of 9 with chronic urinary tract infection (66.7%). Total therapeutic efficacy was obtained in 33 out of 38 patients with urinary tract infection and an overall effectiveness rate showed 86.8%.
2. In this clinical study, enoxacin was effective against E. coli infection in all 9 pa-tients, G(-) bacilli infection in 10 out of 12, G(+) cocci infection in 8 out of 9, gonococcal infection in 2, Staphylococcal infection in 2 and Streptococcal and Proteus infection in 1, respectively.
3. Therapeutic effect was not observed in one patient with nonspecific urethritis caused by unknown organism, one with prostatis by G(+) cocci and 3 with chronic urinary tract infection by G(-) bacilli or G(-) cocci.
4. There was no side reaction related to enoxacin therapy in all 38 patients.
