A Study on the Attitude of Dying Patient¢¥s Family Members toward Death


Abstract
This study is designed to identify the attitude of dying patients family members toward death, its influence on them and other relevant problems and thereby provide a theoretical basis for planning effective nursing intervention for dying patients and their family members. Toward that end, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 75 family members of terminally ill patients hospitalized at the intensive care units of general hospitals in Seoul and Suwon. The data thus obtained was analyzed through x2 method.
The major findings of the study are:
1. The family members of dying patients tended to deny death. By sex male relatives showed a higher rate of acceptance while female relatives showed higher rate of denial.
2. The family members of dying patients were affected by the situation (among other things) psychologically.
3. As for the administration plan for dying patients, a greater number of them indicat-ed that they will keep the patients in hospital for further treatment.
4. The greatest pain that the dying patients were subject to was found to be physical in nature.
5. As for the needs for nursing care the relatives of dying patients expected nurses to visit the patients more frequently.
6. A greater number of patients were unaware of their disease in the terminal stage Also, a greater number of family members indicated that the patients should not be informed of their disease.
7. The relatives of dying patients preferred home for the dying place of patients.
