A Study on Correlations Between Health Locus of Control, Stress and Depression of Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the correlations between health locus of control, stress and depression of hemodialysis patients.
Sixty-nine hemodialysis patients with chronic renal failure from 2 university hospitals, 1 medical clinics in Seoul, were accidental sampled.
Data was collected from the 22nd of Oct. to the 18th of Nov. 1988, by means of questionaire.
The instruments for this study were Wallston et al¢¥s health locus of control scale which consists of 11 items, and the stress index scale was developed by Chon, Zung¢¥s self-rating depression scale.
The data were analyzed by use of descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation cofficient.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The first hypothesis, "The higher the level of stress, the higher the level of depression" was accepted. (r = 0.4167, p = 0.000)
2. The second hypothesis, "The higher the level of external-locus of control, the higher the level of depression" was rejected.
3. The third hypothesis, ?The higher the level of external-locus of control, the higher the level of stress" was rejected.
4. Relationships between general characteristics and various variables were as follows: 1) There were significant differences between stress and the number of hospitalization (F=3.26, p < .01), also between psychological stress and the period of hemodialysis treatment (F=2.95, p < .05), and duration since final diagnosis (F=2.74; p<.05), socioeconomic category among stress categories showed differences by the age.
2) There were significant differences between depression and the period of hemodialysis
