A Study on validation of the Defining characteristics of the Nursing Diagnosis of Fluid Volume


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify content validity of the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis of fluid volume: excess.
This study was based on the classification of fluid volume excess and their defining characteristics proposed by the NANDA.
The sample consisted of 40 clients who were experienced fluid volume excess on the internal medicine in S hospital in Sokcho.
The data were collected over a period of five months, from March 13, to August 14, 1989.
The data were analyzed by frequency and percentage.
The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows,
1. Male consistuted 57.5 per cent of the sample and female 42.5 per cent. The age of the participants ranged from 23 to 79, mean age, 59.1.
2. The most frequent medical diagnosis of all subjects who were experienced, hypertension (9 per cent), hepatoma (17.5 per cent), congestive heart failure (15 per cent), CVA (12.5 per cent), liver cirrhosis (10 per cent), pleurisy (7.5 per cent), myocardial infarction (5 per cent), pyelonephritis (5 per cent), nephrotic syndrome (2.5 per cent), pancrgatitis (2.5 per cent).
3. More than 70 per cent identified defining characteristics were exchange of the serum electrolyte (100 per cent), fatigue (95 per cent), irritability (90 per cent), general weakness (82.5 per cent), shortness of breath (80 per cent), edema (72.5 per cent), increased blood pressure (70 per cent).
4. The average number of defining characteristic items chosen was 7, with a range of four to twenty.
