A Study on the Relationship between Family Visiting and Patient Stress

Abstract
This study was done for the purpose of analysing the relationship between visits of family members and patients stress. The subject consisted of 30 patients who had been in the ICU for 2 days and their family members who were observed and interviewed on two days.
The instruments used for this study were the patientstressor scale, the family needs scale and the patient anxiety behavior scale developed by the Kim Cho Ja and the stateanxiety scale developed by Spielberger and the Locus of Control scale developed by Wallston, et al. Analysis of data was done by use t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficients, stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results of study were as follows.
1. The patients stressor were socioeconomic problems, illness itself, . psychosocial environment of I.C.U., isolation, physical environment of the ICU, absolute bed rest, nurses¢¥ attitudes, treatment and diagnostic measures, damage of self-esteem. The patient¢¥s stressor perception when compared with locus of control showed significance (r=.445, p <.005).
2. Family needs were patient¢¥s condition, information about the patient¢¥s treatment, flexibility of family visiting hours, communication with doctor and nurse, involvement in patient care, available resources, religious help, emotional ventilation.
The family need perception when comp aired anxiety level showed significance "(r= .402, p < .05).
3. In the relationship between family visiting and patient¢¥s stress, the patient¢¥s blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate, following visits of the family member showed no significance at the .05 level but family visiting changed the patient¢¥s subjective feeling positively. (t=9.852, d.f=29 p < .05). There were no significant correlation between family activity and patient¢¥s anxiety-behavior response at the .05 level.
By using stepwise multiple regression analysis it was determined that the main influencing factors on the anxiety of the family member, activity of the family, degree of good feeling toward family member, the needs of the family.
