The Effect of Muscle Relaxation Training on Depression & Anxiety of the Elderly


Abstract
This study was performed to determine the effect of muscle relaxation training on depression and anxiety of the elderly.
Subjets for this study were 23 female elderly.
Depression, anxiety, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate were examined before & after a 2-week muscle relaxation training.
The results were as follows:
1. After the training, depression of the elderly decreased significantly (P .001).
2. After the training, anxiety of the elderly decreased significantly (P s .01).
3. After the training, systolic blood pressure decreased significantly (P S .05).
4. After the training, diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly (P 5.01).
5. Depression was significantly correlated with the number of the family (r= -0.54,
PS.001).
