Abstract

Medical Examiner (M. E.) system was developed in United States in place of Coroner. Thirty nine states, now, adapt the system and recognize its significance. The history and status of the M. E. system, and the qualifications for forensic pathologist are overviewed. Particularly, here is introduced the practice of Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State of Maryland. The introduction of M. E. system in USA and, briefly, in Japan could be a reference for the establishment of the Death Investigative System in Korea in future.
