Studies on the Reference Values of Serum Cholesterol and Glucose in Relation to Hypertension

Abstract
Relationships between the serum levels of glucose and cholesterol, and the blood pressure in different ages and sexes, were examined in a random case study of 2,814males and 935females inhabiting Taejon, Korea.
The results obtained were as follows
1. The mean of serum glucose level was 96.1¡¾24.89mg/dl in male and 92.0¡¾ 16.05mg/dl in female. The glucose level was gradually increased with aging in both of the sexes.
2. The mean of serum cholesterol level was 189.6¡¾37.llmg/dl in male and 196.4¡¾ 38.42mg/dl in female. The cholesterol level was also gradually increased with aging in both of the sexes.
3. The mean of systolic blood pressure was 124.8¡¾ 15.01mmHg in male and 119.3¡¾ 12.30mmHg in female, and the mean of diastolic blood pressure was 83.2¡¾ 11.86mmHg in male and 78.3¡¾9.17mmHg in female. The blood pressure in female was increased with aging until 60 years of age, but decreased thereafter, where as the pressure in male was gradually increased with aging.
4. The levels of serum glucose and cholesterol were higher in the groups showing hypertension than in the normal blood pressure groups in both of the sexes.
5. The differences(P<0.01) of serum cholesterol and glucose value between different ages and sexes and between the normal blood pressure and hypertension were noted as significant results of the study.
