A Study on the Social Support and The Mental-Emotional Health Status in Elderly


Abstract
Recent improvement in the standard living, national income, and medical care have led to a longer average life-span and a higher ratio of elderly people in the total population. Therefore, not only in the field on nursing science but also in the field of many other discipline, issues concerning the elderly have been given increasing interest.
The study was done to know the relationship between social support and mental-emotional health status in the elderly. The subject consisted of 140 active and communicable persons aged over 60 living in Taejon. Data was collected through interview with questionnaires from November 1 to December 30, 1994. The questionnaires were the scale of social support and the scale of mental-emotional status for the elderly. Analysis of data was done by percentage, t-test, ANOVA, and pearson correlation.
The result of this study were as follows
1. The average score of social support in the elderly was 3.4952 The subject perceived significantly high social support in situation of living with their spouse(T=2.25, p<.05), having occupation(T=2.76, p<.05), having many children(F=3.99, p<.01), bearing the living expensive with spouse(F=3.11, p<.05), having enough pocket money(F=2.52, p<.05).
2. The average score of mental-emotional status in the elderly was 3.622. The subject was significantly high mental-emotional health status in situation of living with their spouse(T=1.75, p<.05), having any educational level(F=2.56, p<.05), having occupation(T= 3.45, p<.01), having many children(F=3.23, p<.05), bearing the living expensive with spouse(F=3.32, p<.01), having enough pocket money(F=2.67, p<.05).
3. Social support and mental-emotional health status were positively related(r=.5113, p <.001). The more elderlies perceived social support, the higher the elderlies¢¥ mental-emotional health status.
