Abstract
Nursing is a profession. Do nurse think nursing as a profession? Social system and formal eduction support nursing as a profession.
The purpose of this phenomenological review was attempt to describe the vivid experi ence on nurse¢¥s cognition toward nursing profession.
The study subjucets were 7 registered veteran nurses working for 8 years to 30 years in a university hospital in Busan. One nurse is 8 years, the others are over 10 years on practical nursing field.
Data were collected from June 10, 1994 to May 31, 1995 by open-minded interview. Interviews were done by the researcher and all were tape-recorded. The data analysis was done by Colaizzi¢¥s phenomenological method.
Validity was assured by confirmation with 7 subjects.
From the protocol, 60 significant statements were organized into 28 formulated meanings. From the formulated meaning, themes were identified, organized into 10 theme clusters, and then into 5 categories. The five categories divided two. The three categories were phenomena related to the professional nurse¢¥s behavior, the two were not.
The nures¢¥s behavior which is recognized as the nursing profession included sharing consciousness, professional self-reflection, holistic nursing care. The nurse¢¥s behavior which is not recognized as the nursing profession included intrinsic and exterinsic factors. Intrinsic factors are rejection of formal knowledge, technique and education in mind, lack of self-confidence, nursing activity for a fee. Extrinsic factors are a sharer who is division of labour, confused role behavior.
From this phenomenological review, nurse¢¥s cognition toward nursing profession was nearly low level in real world but high level in ideal world. This gap is the problem. This study revealed the gap as a preblematic phenomena. For overcome this gap, application of nurse¢¥s life philosophy and belief in pracrical nursing field were recommended.
