A Study on the Quality of Life of the Cervix Cancer Patients Undergoing a Radiation Therapy


Abstract
This descriptive study was undertaken to measure the quality of life score and investigate the correlation between the demographic characteristics, the diagnostic related characteristics, physical symptoms, relation with family and quality of life of the cervix cancer patients undergoing a radiation therapy as on attempt to provide basic data to help them attain a better quality of life.
This subjects for this study were 80 out-patients undergoing a radiation therapy at C university hospital in Kwang-Ju, from April, 1992 to October, 1994.
The data were obtained using a convenience sampling technique. The, tool of this study was the quality of life scale developed by Ro, You Ja. The data were analyzed using a SAS program for percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA.
The results were as follows
1. The total average score of the quality of life of the subjects was 138-95 and the range was from 122 to 164, item mean score(range 1-5) was 2.95.
For each factor in the quality of life scores, the mean scores(range 1-5) were as follows : emotional state 3.45, relationship with neighbors factor 3.15, physical state and function 3.00, self esteem 2.85, economic life 2.77, family relationship 2.50.
2. The incidence of physical symptoms was seen fatigue(91.2 %), anorexia (82.5 %) nausea(73.7 %) and weight loss(61.2 %) in order.
3. The result of the analysis of the relationships between the quality of life scores and demographic characteristics were as follows : There were significant differences, between age(t=5.59, p=0.001), marital state(t=3.91, p=0.012), family living together(t=-2.68, p =0.009), occupation(t=2.70, p=0.015) and person paying a medical fee(t=3.82, p=0.000).
4. The result of the analysis of the relationships between the quality of life scores and diagnostic related characteristics were as follows : There were significant differences between chemotherapy(t=3.17, p=0.003), complication(t=2.02, p=0.050) and admission (t=2.55, p= 0.013).
5. The result of the analysis of the relationship between the family relationship factor in the quality of life scores and physical symptoms were as follows
There was a significant difference between family relationship factor and alopecia (R=-0.3943, p=0.001).
