A Concept Analysis of Empowerment

Abstract
|
|
|
Recently, the concept of health is changed from the biochemical paradigm to the sociomedical and socioecologic paradigm according to the circumstance of social status.
So, active maintenance of health balance for the health improvement and enhancement of the health capacity are emphasized instead of the simple trend of preventive medicine about the specific disease or functional impairment. Empowerment is the one of the very important concept for the request of the change among the health-specialists. It cannot be summarized so simply, furthermore, it will be interpretated as another meaning according to the social and cultural context.
This researcher tried to analyze the concept of empowerment of the literature to develop the strategy of empowerment in order to apply to the nursing practice. Followings are the attributes of the empowerment:
First, it maximizes the independence by the gain of the control about the environment .
Second, it shares the individual power by mutual respect and trust
Third, it accepts the responsibility according to the self-participation and decision making. In consequence of these attributes, the definition of empowerment will be redefined that it develop the personal ability by share of power based on the mutual respect and trust, and accept the responsibility.
