Abstract
Comparative study of the incidence of manic depressive insanity and involutional depressive psychosis of Korea, United States of America and Japan, was done, using the statistics that the author made out of in-patients of Department of Psychiatry, University Hospital, Wisconsin University during his stay there, that was obtained "in Korea and -that was collected from literatures. It must be mentioned that the diagnostic criteria and classification of the diseases adopted in three countries is different between these Countries, that. is, the one used in the United States and in Korea is different from that adopted in Japan it-all.
The results the author obtained in his survey are showed in the following.
1) Incidence of Psychoses of Korea is similar to that of the United States and lower than that of lapan.
2) Percentage of psychotic inpatients of Korea is similar to that of Japan and higher than that of the United States, relating to the extent of the advancement of mental hygiene enlightened and popularized to the population and various social elements.
3) It can be detected that manic depressive insanity decreases while involutional depressive psychoses increases in the United States. However it is impossible that this tendency can be discussed in terms of the obtained Japanese statistics in which Manic depressive insanity and involutional psychoses are not
differentiated diagnostically.
4) Percentage of relative incidence of manic depressive insanity and involutional depressive psychoses of Korea is similar to that of the United States. This, however, can not be discussed in terms of the obtained Japanese statistics for the same reason.
6) With these results mentioned the author claims that universally unified diagnostic criteria and classification of depression should first of all be established.
