Influence of horn keratin substituted low protein diet on murine organs

Abstract
Rats fed 8 % protein diet were divided into four groups. Casein as the sole source of protein in diet was used in control and an extra 1 mg of keratin per rat per day was received in one group. The remainingg groups were fed equal amounts of a diet but partially substituted with horn keratin for protein. At the end of 3 weeks feeding all the animals were killed after a 24 hours fast. Determination of the serum enzymes and histologicral study on several organs were performed. No change of serum amylase or lipase activity was seen in all groups. Histological examination of organs such as brain, liver, pancreas, kidney or testis revealed appearently normal in animals fed 8%¢¥ casein or an extra i mg keratin per day. The early atrophic lesions of the pancreas in the animals fed a diet containing horn protein in an amount of more than half of total protein source. In a few animals fed horn protein a mild to moderate fatty degeneration was noted in liver cells.
